Evaluate Samsung Galaxy S6's TouchWiz identity through comparative analysis with other launchers to identify shortcomings, and to propose and implement solutions for the Galaxy S7.
GALAXY S7 IDENTITY MOTION DEMO
As the motion lead, I managed 3 motion designers by prioritizing tasks to ensure deadlines were met and delivered the final motion proposal for Galaxy S7. We evaluated the motion of the iPhone iOS 6, Windows Phone, Google Android M and Samsung Galaxy S6 launchers through this project.
My areas of focus:
- Overall Structures
- Screen on and off
- App launch and close
- Go to recent apps
- App to App (follow app launch and recent app)
- Launch app from notification (base on app launch and unlock)
- App folder
Transitions move the user between states quickly and smoothly, creating a sense of dynamic energy. These transitions enhance the hierarchy of the structure, allowing the user to focus his/her attention.
By studying the transitions in between states, we mapped out and compared the structures of the iOS 6, Windows phone, Android M and current Galaxy S6.
MOTION PAIN points from current s6 system
Most transitions are inconsistent.
Ex. screen on and off, notification incoming and dismiss.
LACK OF HIERARCHY
Some motion transitions don’t follow the expectation provided by the hierarchy. The choreography lacks any significant meaning.
Even though some animations follow material design visually, they don’t fully utilize ease-inand ease-out transitions.
galaxy s7 motion structure proposal
After the competitive analysis and user research, we proposed that a linear construction and clear spacial relationships is the key to addressing the aforementioned pain points in the new structure.
The spacial depth represents a hierarchy which more closely mirrors the current context, simplifying the mental model for the user.
- Within this clear linear structure, the main Layers are ordered as:
1. Lock Screen
2. Home Screen + Zero
3. App Drawer
- The current app launches above the Home Screen
- The recent apps live next to the current app (chronologically)
- The App Drawer lives below the Home Screen
proposal for S7 system
Visuals need to be consistent so it is clear where they came from and where they are going.
CALM AND ELEGANT MOTION
Motion should feel elegant through the use of easing and transitions.
The hierarchy should be evident through the use of meaningful transitions. The eye should follow the most important content.
