Samsung HeartWise

Discover a whole new way to heart wellness.

Problem

Heart disease is #1 cause of death worldwide and healthcare costs are very expensive in the US. Data proves that cardiac rehab programs help reduce mortality. However, patients need to go to the hospital to have numerous hospital visits and the solutions that hospitals provide are still very conservative and outdated.

Solution

Samsung (SRA) and Kaiser Permanente conducted a joint innovation technology program to create a solution.

The Samsung HeartWise program is for patients participating in a home-based heart wellness program recommended by their doctor. It is designed to be used with the Samsung HeartWise smartphone app in conjunction with the Samsung Gear S3 to promote a healthy lifestyle. With Samsung’s technology patients can have an easy and convenient way to track and maintain their road to a successful healthy lifestyle.

Motion demo

my role

As motion design lead, I collaborated with the interaction and visual designers to provide a seamless watch and phone experience for elderly patients. Through a step-by-step process, patients can seamlessly navigate from tracking their heart rates before, during, and after exercise and cool down,  to reporting activity, RPE, and symptoms for each exercise all from one device.

Our design has passed WCAG AAA compliance.

In addition, I collaborated with another motion designer to create 27 tutorial videos to reduce the learning curve of Heartwise, including designing the storyboards, shooting the videos, and editing the footages.

See the user guide website.

design for wearables

Heartwise's users can only use smartwatches for basic functionalities. Our mission is to design a wearable experience to make cardiac rehab easier and more efficient.

Majority of our users are seniors. Designing for seniors can be a challenge. It's very difficult for senior users to operate devices on such a small screen. As a motion designer, I used motions to navigate users on wearable UI, interact with the watch, provide delightful waiting experience when they are measuring the heart rate.
